Sewer Camera Inspection for Bountiful Homes

Sewer camera inspection in Bountiful is how you find out what is actually happening inside a sewer line instead of guessing at it. Maybe your drain keeps backing up, maybe you are about to buy a home, or maybe a plumber told you the line needs work and you want proof before you pay for a dig. Right Way Plumbing runs a camera the full length of the line, shows you the footage on the monitor as we go, and tells you exactly where the problem sits and how deep it is. Scott Rasmussen is licensed with 4.9 stars across 140 Google reviews, and you see the pipe for yourself before anyone recommends a repair.

A camera inspection tells you three things a drain snake never can: what the blockage really is, whether the pipe itself is cracked, bellied, or root-invaded, and exactly where along the run it sits. That last part matters most in Bountiful. A lot of homes here were built before 1980 and still run original clay or cast iron sewer mains, and the joints in those older lines are where tree roots get in, especially on the foothill lots. Pinpointing the spot means a repair gets dug in one place instead of across the whole yard. What a sewer camera inspection costs depends on how long the run is, whether the line has to be cleared first so the lens can see, and whether you want the problem located and marked at the surface. Every line is different, so call (801) 821-3149 and we will tell you straight what your situation needs.

What the Camera Actually Finds Camera

One scope answers what is wrong, how bad it is, and exactly where.

Root Intrusion

Roots work in through the joints of older clay and cast iron mains and keep growing. The camera shows how far in they are and whether cutting clears it or the joint is already failing.

Cracks and Collapses

A hairline crack or a collapsed section looks the same from inside the house: a line that backs up. On the monitor it is obvious, and so is exactly where it is.

Bellies and Low Spots

A belly is a low spot where the pipe has sagged and waste pools instead of flowing. Decades of soil movement under Bountiful's steep lots cause them, and only a camera confirms one.

Blockages and Buildup

Grease, scale, and debris build up on the pipe wall long before the line fully clogs. The footage shows whether a cleaning fixes it or something structural is driving the backups.

Pipe Material and Age

Knowing whether you are looking at clay, cast iron, or PVC, and how old it is, changes what repair makes sense. The camera tells us before we quote anything.

Offset Joints

Offset or misaligned joints catch everything that passes and are a common failure point in lines laid in the 1960s and 70s. We flag them so they get addressed before they collapse.

The Process

How a Sewer Camera Inspection Works

An honest inspection is not just running a camera. It is showing you what it found and giving you a straight read on whether the line needs work or just a cleaning.

  1. Access the Line

We find a clean-out or pull a fixture to get the camera into the line. If the pipe is too blocked for the lens to see, we clear it first with drain cleaning so the inspection is actually worth doing.

  2. Scope the Full Run

We feed the camera the full length of the run, from the house toward the city connection, and watch the live feed the whole way. We do not stop at the first problem, because a line can have more than one.

  3. Review the Footage Together

You watch the footage with us on the monitor. We point out what you are looking at, roots, a crack, a belly, a joint, so the recommendation is something you can see, not something you have to take on faith.

  4. Locate and Mark It

When there is damage, we use a locator to mark its exact position and depth at the surface. That is what lets a repair get dug in one spot instead of trenching the whole line.

Before You Buy

Buying a Home? Scope the Line First Scope

If you are buying a home in Davis County, the sewer line is one of the few major systems a standard home inspection does not see. It is buried, and a surface-level walkthrough cannot tell you whether the line to the street is sound or one winter from collapsing. On the older housing stock around Bountiful, much of it built before 1980 on clay or cast iron, that is a real risk and an expensive one to inherit. A sewer camera inspection before closing costs a fraction of what a line replacement does, and it gives you something concrete to negotiate with if the footage shows a problem. We will scope the line, hand you the findings, and tell you plainly what we saw. For jobs where the inspection shows structural damage, we can talk through pipe replacement or main water line repair options.

Why Older Bountiful Sewer Lines Need a Look

  1. Older Mains Fail From the Inside

Clay and cast iron sewer mains from the 1960s and 70s are common under older Bountiful homes. Clay cracks at the joints and cast iron corrodes from the inside. A camera is the only way to know which stage yours is at without digging.

  2. Root Intrusion at the Joints

Tree roots find the hairline gaps at pipe joints and grow into the line. This is the number one cause of recurring main line backups in the older foothill neighborhoods, and the footage shows exactly where they got in.

  3. Soil Movement on Steep Lots

Bountiful's steep lots have shifted for decades, and that soil movement sags sewer lines into bellies where waste collects. You cannot clear a belly, you have to find it, which is what the inspection does.

Sewer Camera Inspection Questions, Answered Straight

When do I actually need a sewer camera inspection?
The common reasons are recurring main line backups that cleaning does not fix for long, buying or selling a home and wanting to know the line's condition, and planning a repair where you need to know exactly where the damage is before anyone digs. If only one fixture is slow, you usually do not need a camera. If the whole house backs up or the problem keeps coming back, that is when the footage pays for itself.
Does the line have to be cleared before you can scope it?
Sometimes. A camera lens cannot see through standing water or a packed clog, so if the line is fully blocked we clear it first with drain cleaning, then run the camera on the open pipe. On a line that is slow but still flowing, we can often scope it as is. We will tell you which situation you are in before we start.
Can you tell exactly where the problem is?
Yes. The camera head carries a transmitter, and we use a locator above ground to mark the spot and the depth at the surface. That is the whole point of scoping before a repair: it lets the dig happen in one place instead of trenching the length of the yard looking for the damage.
What is the difference between a camera inspection and drain cleaning?
Drain cleaning removes a blockage. A camera inspection diagnoses what is actually in the line and whether the pipe itself is damaged. They often go together: we clear the line, then scope it to confirm the pipe is sound and the backup will not come straight back. A cleaning without an inspection on a recurring problem is treating the symptom, not the cause.
Should I scope the sewer line before buying a house?
On an older home in Davis County, it is one of the smartest inspections you can add. A standard home inspection does not see the buried sewer line, and on pre-1980 clay or cast iron that line can be the single most expensive thing to fix. A camera inspection before closing costs a fraction of a replacement and gives you real footage to negotiate with if there is a problem.
