Garbage Disposal Installation for Bountiful Homes

Right Way Plumbing handles garbage disposal installation in Bountiful and throughout Davis County, whether you've already bought a unit or need help selecting the right one for your kitchen. Scott Rasmussen, the licensed plumber behind every job, can typically get to you the same day. Most installs take under two hours. Call (801) 821-3149 to get on the schedule.

What a disposal installation actually involves: shutting off power at the breaker, removing the old unit if there is one, mounting the new disposal to the sink flange, connecting the drain line, wiring the power supply or hardwiring as code requires, and testing under full water flow for leaks. It sounds straightforward, and it mostly is when a licensed plumber does it. Bountiful homes built before the 1990s sometimes have older sink flanges that need to be replaced before a new disposal can mount properly. That adds time, not much, but it's the kind of thing that surprises a homeowner who bought the disposal and figured they'd handle it themselves. Cost depends on whether the mounting hardware carries over, whether the drain configuration needs adjustment, and how accessible the cabinet space is. Every job is different. Contact Right Way Plumbing for an accurate estimate.

What the Installation Process Covers

Every disposal install follows the same sequence whether the job is a swap-out or a first-time fit.

  1. Power Isolation

We cut power at the breaker before touching anything. Garbage disposals are hardwired or plug-in, and working live under a kitchen sink is not a shortcut worth taking. The circuit stays off until the final test.

  2. Sink Flange and Mounting

The mounting assembly is the part most DIY installs get wrong. We seat the flange with plumber's putty, torque the mounting ring evenly, and verify the unit hangs level before connecting anything downstream.

  3. Drain and Dishwasher Connection

If your dishwasher drains through the disposal, that knockout plug comes out. The drain line gets connected to the P-trap or branch drain, and we check the slope so water doesn't sit in the line.

  4. Electrical Hookup and Test

We restore power and run the disposal through a full test cycle under running water, checking every connection point for drips. If it hums without spinning or leaks at the flange, we fix it before we leave.

Choosing Your Unit

Horsepower and Feed Type: What Actually Matters

Picking the wrong disposal creates problems that show up six months later. Here's how to choose correctly.

1/2 HP for Light Use

Fine for one or two people who mainly rinse soft scraps. Not built for fibrous vegetables, bones, or heavy daily cooking. Bountiful's hard water accelerates wear on lower-horsepower motors, so don't undersize if you cook regularly.

3/4 HP for Most Households

The sweet spot for a family of three to five. Handles most food waste without jamming and runs quieter than the 1/2 HP models most box stores push. This is what Scott installs most often.

1 HP for Heavy Use

If you cook daily, have a large family, or are outfitting a rental property that sees high turnover, the 1 HP unit pays for itself in avoided service calls. More torque means fewer jams.

Continuous vs. Batch Feed

Continuous feed runs while the switch is on. Batch feed requires a stopper in the drain before it activates. Batch feed is safer if there are young kids in the home. Both can be installed correctly. Neither is universally better.

Repair or Replace? How to Tell

If the disposal is under five years old and jammed, a reset or jam-clearing usually fixes it. Honestly, a lot of service calls don't need a new unit. Scott will tell you that directly, not sell you a replacement you don't need. If the unit is leaking from the body (not the connections), grinding loudly, or tripping the reset button every few days despite no obvious jam, replacement is the right call. Most disposals last eight to twelve years under normal use. Davis County's hard water can shorten that slightly because mineral buildup affects the seal on the bottom plate over time. If yours is past the ten-year mark and starting to act up, replacement is almost always cheaper than repeated service visits. See the garbage disposal repair page if you're not sure which direction to go. Scott can diagnose it on-site before any work starts.

Local Considerations

Why Bountiful Homes Need a Licensed Plumber for This Job

  1. Utah Plumbing Code

Utah requires that garbage disposal installations meet the state's residential plumbing code. That includes proper venting of the drain line and correct discharge pipe sizing. A licensed plumber knows what the inspector looks for. An unlicensed handyman often doesn't.

  2. Older Drain Configurations

Established Bountiful neighborhoods have homes from the 1960s through the 1980s with drain configurations that weren't designed for modern disposal units. The P-trap depth, the branch drain height, and the cabinet clearance all affect how an install goes. We've seen enough of these to know what to look for before the unit comes out of the box.

  3. Hard Water and Drain Health

Davis County water is hard. That mineral content builds up in the drain line that the disposal empties into. If there's already partial blockage from calcium deposits, a new disposal won't fix slow draining. We'll spot that during the install and tell you before it becomes a problem. A drain repair may be needed alongside the install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install a garbage disposal I already purchased?
Yes. Bring your own unit and Scott will install it, provided it's compatible with your sink's mounting assembly. InSinkErator and Moen use different mount systems. If you bought a brand that uses a different flange than what's in your sink, a new flange gets added to the job. That's worth knowing before you buy.
Do I need a plumber or an electrician to install a garbage disposal?
If an outlet already exists under the sink, a licensed plumber handles the full install, including plugging in or wiring the unit. If there's no outlet and the disposal needs a dedicated circuit run from the panel, an electrician handles that part first. Most Bountiful homes built after 1985 already have the outlet. Scott will confirm before starting.
How much should I pay someone to install a garbage disposal?
Installation cost depends on whether it's a simple swap-out, whether the sink flange needs replacing, and how the drain is configured. Complex drain adjustments or older sink setups take more time. We don't publish flat rates because the range is wide enough to be misleading. Every job is different. Contact Right Way Plumbing at (801) 821-3149 for an accurate estimate.
Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?
A hum without rotation almost always means the motor is getting power but the grinding plate is jammed. There's an Allen wrench port at the bottom of the disposal for exactly this. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen key and work it back and forth to free the plate, then press the red reset button on the bottom before turning it back on. If that doesn't fix it, the motor or capacitor may be failing, and replacement is usually more cost-effective than a motor repair.
Does a garbage disposal affect my drain line or create separate plumbing issues?
It can. Disposals grind food but don't eliminate grease, and grease coats the drain line over time regardless of what's going into the disposal. Bountiful homes with galvanized drain lines, common in pre-1980 construction, are especially prone to buildup. If your disposal drains slowly or backs up into the sink basin, the drain line needs attention. We can assess both the disposal and the drain line condition on the same visit.
Should I repair or replace a garbage disposal that's leaking?
Depends on where it's leaking. A leak at the top where the disposal meets the sink flange usually means the plumber's putty dried out. That's a seal job, not a replacement. A leak from the body of the unit, typically at the bottom plate, means an internal seal failed. Those are not worth repairing on a unit older than six or seven years. Replacement is the smarter call. Scott will tell you which one it is when he looks at it.
